Nick Bassick

Nicholas Bassick, 82, of Boise, met his maker on September 2, 2005. Nick was born in Mackay, ID on October 13, 1922 to Yugoslavian immigrants, Pete and Annie Bassick.

Nick attended schools in Mackay.

He later joined the U.S. Army on February 22, 1943. He served with the 146th Engineers Battalion at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. He received a Purple Heart for being wounded in Belgium. At Cologne, Germany, he met up with his brother Dan, who was also serving in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945.

Nick married Barbara Jean Murphy in Boise on April 16, 1955. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Two sons and a daughter were born to this union.

Nick was a 59-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 291, working in powerline construction throughout the western states. In 1963, he survived an electrocution accident on the job near Sandy, OR.

After retirement, during harvest season, Nick drove a 10-wheel truck, hauling potatoes from the field for Cinder Cone Farms in Mountain Home, ID.

Nick was very unselfish and hardworking. He loved the outdoors and hunted and fished with his sons and later with his grandsons. He also enjoyed sports. He attended his children's and grandchildren's athletic and school activities as well as watched football, basketball, and baseball on, as he called it, "the boob tube."

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and a charter member of I.B.E.W. Local 291 Retirees.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, of Boise, ID; sons, Phil and his wife Carmen, of Boise, ID; and Paul of Glenns Ferry, ID; daughter, Brenda Bassick, of Boise, ID; one granddaughter; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Joe, Annie, John, Helen, Milford, Dan, Frances, and Martin.

A special thanks goes to the staff at Life's Doors Hospice and Phillippi Cottage, especially Ruby, Connie Anne, Judy, Bridget, Jeremy, and the volunteers. All were so very caring and helpful.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on September 9, 2005 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Rev. Steve Rukavina will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise.
